On Monday, January 25, Wild Bill Wiederhold, WB6BFG and
Ellen Utschig
N6UWW will give a presentation on their latest
DXpedition.
In 2008, Wild Bill was invited to join a DXpedition
team led by Dick Norton, N6AA, to Honduras for CQ WW SSB. It was an
opportunity of a lifetime. Ellen envisioned Caribbean beaches & immediately
invited herself along. HQ3Z placed second worldwide and Wild Bill earned his
way onto the team, more than proving his worth being a "jack of all
trades" as well as an avid contester.
In 2009, the team went to the island of Jersey. Operating GJ2A out of the
Jersey Amateur Radio Club's station (an old signal tower built by Todt
soldiers as part of the Atlantic Wall during the Occupation) was both
intriguing and challenging.
We hope you will attend the GTARC meeting on Monday,
January 25th when Wild Bill & Ellen will tell us about their most
recent DXpedition to Jersey.

from around the world, propagation permitting !!!! George will show a
number of different software packages such as DigiPan & HAM Scope,
among others. Many of these software packages are free for downloading
from the Internet. No special interface box is required to just receive
digital signals. The laptop computer does all the work &
the laptop screen will be projected on the overhead screen for all to see.
All demo's will be limited to receive-only. If time allows,
George will also show various other digital mode & CW (Morse Code) decoder
software capabilities included with some of the software packages. "Everyone is welcome and for more

Getting the most out of your hand held radio!
Alan Cook and Karl Gronbach will be
presenting a talk on how new (or experienced) amateur radio operators can get
the most out of their VHF / UHF “Handie-Talkie” or hand held radios. Topics to be covered in this presentation
include:
Basic repeater operation including PL tones,
frequency offsets, how to check in on a net and basic procedures and courtesy.
Improving your signal including antennas for
base and mobile operation, the use of power amplifiers and antenna construction
and placement.
The presentation will also cover “stealth
operation” in antenna restricted areas and various power options and gadgets.
This is a hands on demonstration and all
licensed amateurs are encouraged to bring their own radios and there will be a
Q and A session.
Everyone is welcome and for more information
please contact Alan Cook at (909) 730-2323. |

John Alday, W6DCC will be
giving a presentation on producing
fairly accurate antenna patterns with a minimum of equipment cost. The parts consists of an obsolete radio, a
rotator with no azimuth readout, Windows ME laptop, etc. The only expensive
units are accurate attenuators and some commercial hardware. John uses
EZNEC and NEC4WIN to predict the gain, beam width, etc. then goes to
the “lab” to try to reproduce the results. The value in this project, as John
see’s it, is the ability to physically measure antenna parameters that are
difficult to model using antenna modeling software. It is also nice to have
physical evidence that an antenna is working as expected. This should be an interesting follow up of
George Fredrick’s presentation several months ago.
RESUME
John
Alday, W6DCC, has been licensed since 1948. When drafted
into the U.S. Army, ham radio played a big part in his being selected to attend
the radar school at Ft.
Monmouth, NJ. Years later he was math/physics double major at Cal
Poly Univ., San
Luis Obispo, CA graduating with a BS in mathematics.
John
worked as a (DOD, Navy) physicist doing research on a variety of projects from
ELF to far infrared. He published widely in the IEEE and other publications and
holds three patents in the microwave field.
A
life time family decision prompted him to choose an eight year assignment to Puerto Rico as a missile flight analyst and telemetry field
office employee. While there, he was active as KP4DKX working many contests,
etc. When they returned to the states, John worked as project/test/procurement
engineer on several projects until retiring from DOD. He then worked in private
industry for a number of years until finally retiring.
John
lives in Nuevo, CA with his XYL (of 53 years) Margie, whose famous
quotation is:
“THE
NEXT TIME AROUND, NO WIRES!!!”
He
is an ARRL member and a life time member of IEEE. Current ham radio interests
include antenna measurements, 6 meters and contesting (mostly CW). Other
interests are playing trumpet or bass in three bands and gold prospecting.

“Life Without Full Duplex”
WHERE: Rancho Water District Community Room

WHEN: Monday, August 24, 2009

Michael Scofield, N6OKG, is an author and consultant in data management. He holds a faculty appointment of Assistant Professor, Health Information Management at Loma Linda University. For several years he was Asst. Emergency Coordinator for the Orange County Hospital Disaster Support Communication System (ARES).
His presentation, "Life Without Full Duplex" discusses many lessons learned in 20 years of support of Orange County Hospitals. When amateur radio replaces the "full duplex" telephone system most hospital and emergency personnel are familiar with, communications becomes more difficult. Even when the technology of radio communications works, the semantics can get garbled. The meaning of messages can be misinterpreted. Channels can saturate. This lecture (given over 25 times) explores what happens, and what training and techniques can mitigate these problems.
